Published at(NEW YORK) — More than 11 years after the 9/11 terror attacks, ailing first responders are getting help.
Fourteen New York City firefighters and an officer from the New York State Department of Corrections are the first to receive money from the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund. Each will receive anywhere from $10,000 to $1.5 million to help them cope with injuries and medical conditions linked to their work in and around Ground Zero.
The firefighter who’s receiving $1.5 million is 43 years old and suffered severe respiratory problems that forced him to retire.
