According to a statement issued by the Ft. Lauderdale Police Department, William L. Roberts — Ross’ birth name — was inside a 2011 silver Rolls Royce traveling in the vicinity of 1410 E. Las Olas Boulevard around 5 a.m. when “occupants of the Rolls Royce heard multiple gunshots being fired in their direction.”

“The driver of the Rolls Royce attempted to drive away from the direction of the shots being fired and lost control of the vehicle, striking a nearby apartment building,” the statement continued.

Witnesses tell ABC News affiliate WPLG that Rozay, who turned 37 on Monday, was visibly shaken after the incident.  The rapper had just left a birthday celebration at the Floridian Restaurant, according to locals.

Neither Ross nor his female passenger were injured in the shooting.

Police are searching for a suspect or suspects.

Last year, Ross had to cancel concerts in Charlotte and Greensboro, N.C., due to threats from the street gang Gangster Disciples, who are believed to have a beef with Ross.  The rapper’s camp never confirmed that threat.
