After the Baltimore Ravens squeezed out a win against the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl Sunday, California Senators Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein made good on their Super Bowl bet with Maryland Senators Ben Cardin and Barbara Mikulski.

“It is the vanquished coming to a meeting with the victors,” Feinstein said.

The California senators delivered the loot they wagered from San Francisco — Dungeness crab, bottles of Napa Valley chardonnay, sourdough bread and a selection of North California cheeses from Humboldt Fog and Cowgirl Creamery.

“Now this is a very heavy ransom, don’t you think?” Feinstein asked.

Mikulski seemed to enjoy the look of the crab, waving it as she spoke and cracking it in half.  The Maryland senators thanked their California colleagues for making good on their bet and the 49ers for being part of the tough Super Bowl game.

“On Sunday night, you and your team and ours gave America a thrill of a lifetime, 34 to 31, right down to the last minute.  It was so exciting, we were so pumped,” Mikulski, who wore purple and a Ravens hat, said.  “We thank you for giving our fans a great game.  We feel we are the best.  Our Ravens fly high.  They soar all over Baltimore.”

“We do share two great football teams.  The 49ers and the Ravens, two great teams, but more importantly, we share two great cities — San Francisco and Baltimore.  We’re very proud of our cities,” Cardin, who also wore a Ravens hat, said.

But the exchange wasn’t free of smack talk.

“I am very proud of our 49ers. They never gave up and they almost caught up,” Boxer said.  “In the spirit of our interesting banter that we’ve had for weeks, let me congratulate you, not only for winning but for making sure that your family members reffed the last quarter.”

Had the 49ers won the Super Bowl, Cardin and Mikulski would have forked over the Baltimore delicacies of Faidley’s crab cakes, Berger cookies and Heavy Seas beer — plus a can of Baltimore hairspray from Mikulski.
