Colts Parting Ways With Dwight Freeney

Getty S 21612 Freeney?  SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1361048694926NFL via Getty Images(NEW YORK) — The Indianapolis Colts are saying good bye to one of the franchise’s all-time greatest players. The team has announced that they will no re-sign linebacker Dwight Freeney.

Freeney played for the Colts for 11 seasons, and his 107.5 careers sacks are the most in franchise history. He also won a Super Bowl with the team back in 2006.

Despite his high sack total, his productivity has slipped in recent years. His sack totals have decreased in each of the past three seasons. He finished 2012 with 5.0 sacks, his lowest total since 2007 when he had 3.5 sacks in nine games.

“I was very surprised to hear they wanted to go in a different direction,” Freeney texted to ESPN’s Ed Werder. “It would have been nice to retire a Colt … My plan is to hit the free-agent market and see who has interest.”

Along with Freeney, the team annouced they will not bring back wide reciever Austin Collie, who had been dealing with concussion issues few seasons.
