Idaho Falls Police Issue Gas Pump Scam Warning

gas scam

(IDAHO FALLS, ID)  —  The Idaho Falls Police Department is cautioning all residents to pay for gasoline purchases inside the store at all gas station locations in Idaho Falls.    Police are currently investigating the installation of credit card skimmers found on gas pumps at two different businesses.  All cases were reported to police Thursday.    Since this discovery, police are working with gas stations to ensure the security of all financial transactions.  Police are asking residents to use caution when using a credit or debit card at the gas pump.

  • Skimmers can only hold so much memory, so scammers are usually hanging out nearby. They wait until 1 or 2 people use the pump, then have to pull the skimmers before the information expires. They know they have to act fast, before they’re noticed and the card is shut down.

Gas stations: Look for loiterers. People hovering around the pumps but not buying gas. This is step one.

Chevron stations in Vegas and Utah have ‘seals’ on their pumps, and signs saying to alert management if the seal looks tampered with or is broken. Skimmers have to access the circuitry of the pump to be able to skim, so the seals help prevent unauthorized access. The only time I use a card at the pump is when I see a seal, and only if it is untampered.
