The 36-year-old Overbay will also receive an invitation to spring training.

Overbay joins a Sox team that has little depth at the position. The team has two first basemen on the roster: Mike Napoli, who has primarily been a catcher for his career, and Mauro Gomez, who has only 15 major league starts at the position.

The left-handed Overbay struggled last year hitting .259 with 10 RBIs in 65 games with the Atlanta Braves and Arizona Diamondbacks.

For his career, Overbay has hit .270 with 318 doubles, 133 homers and 581 RBIs.
