(SALT LAKE CITY, UT) – A top Mormon leader is backing President Barack Obama’s comprehensive immigration reform bill. Dieter F. Uchtdorf, second counselor in the faith’s First Presidency, joined 13 other religious leaders from around the country for a meeting with Obama on Friday. Obama’s plan calls for a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants, which Uchtdorf state was “totally in line” with LDS values. He says the U.S. has a long history of illegal immigration and that the government should respond with compassion.
