Michael Thompson Wins Honda Classic
Published at(PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla.) — The first PGA Tour win for Michael Thompson didn’t come easy.
Thompson held off Geoff Ogilvy and shot a one-under-69 to win the Honda Classic at PGA National on Sunday.
“This week was magical,” Thompson said. “Just had a groove and kept feeling it.”
With a one-shot lead on the 18th hole, Thompson hit a shot into the bunker left of the green, leaving a layup and a birdie putt to seal the win.
Ogilvy finished two shots behind Thompson and knew it was impressive for him to finish the way he did. “There’s a lot of golf courses on tour that it might be easy to close out a golf tournament — or easier — but this is not one of them,” Ogilvy said.
With the win, Thompson gets a two-year exemption on the PGA tour and entrance into three World Golf Championship events this year.
Tiger Woods finished tied for 37th.
