The Mayor known for taking on trans fats, salt and the size of soft drinks has a new public health target: earphones.

The New York City Health Department is developing a social media campaign funded with public and private money to warn people, particularly young people, about the, “risks of loud and long listening” to personal music players.

According to the New York Post, The Hearing Loss Prevention Media Campaign will utilize focus groups and social media to raise teen and young adult awareness about potential hearing loss caused by unsafe listening volumes for earphones.

The new campaign comes as hearing loss among adolescents nationwide is rising. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey found that from 1988 to 2006, hearing loss increased by 30 percent.
