The sifting will include 590 cubic yards of material from several construction areas at and around the WTC site, including the World Financial Center, West Street and an area north of Liberty Street.  All of the sifting will take place at Fresh Kills in Staten Island in an operation expected to last 10 weeks.

To date, the medical examiner’s office has identified 1,634 victims of the attacks on the World Trade Center.  Since 2006 there have been 34 new identifications.

The office has vowed to continue DNA testing “until all recovered remains that can be matched with a victim are identified.”

Unidentified remains will be interred at the 9/11 memorial in an underground crypt accessible only by 9/11 families.
