(GARLAND, Texas) — Southern University (23-9, 15-3 SWAC) is heading to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2006 after defeating Prairie View (15-19, 8-10 SWAC) on Saturday, 45-44 to win the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament championship.
Senior guard Derick Beltran scored a team high 13 points and pulled down seven rebounds for the Jaguars while teammate, guard YonDarius Johnson contributed eight points.
The game came down to the wire as Panthers guard Montrael Scott hit a jumper to cut Prairie View’s deficit to 45-44 with 42 seconds left. After Southern called a timeout, Jaguars senior guard Jameel Grace drained the shot clock before missing a three-pointer. Panthers senior guard Jourdan DeMuynck grabbed the rebound and drove the length of the floor, but lost the ball as he was attempting to pass sealing the victory for Southern.
