Connecticut Advances To Women’s National Title Game
Published at(NEW ORLEANS) — The Huskies would not let Notre Dame get the best of them this time.
Freshman Breanna Stewart scored a game-high 29 points to lead Connecticut to an 83-65 win over Notre Dame, sending the Huskies back to the national championship game.
“Given the stage, and what was at stake I don’t know that I’ve seen any bigger performance,” Auriemma said, referring to Stewart’s big game. “I know there’s been NCAA tournament games that we’ve had certain individuals play great, but I don’t remember a player having a better game in this environment.”
Connecticut (34-4) lost three close games to the Irish this season. They built a double-digit halftime lead and never looked back.
The game marked the end of an illustrious collegiate career as Irish guard Skyler Diggins played her last game for Notre Dame (35-2). She finished with 10 points on 3-of-15 shooting.
The Huskies will be going for their eighth national championship when they face Louisville on Tuesday night.
