FAA Issues Directive to Inspect Boeing 737 Jets

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(WASHINGTON) — The Federal Aviation Administration issued an airworthiness directive (AD) on Monday calling for the inspection of the hundreds of Boeing 737 jets that are flown in the U.S.
The agency said the directive was prompted by “reports of an incorrect procedure used to apply the wear and corrosion protective surface coating to attach pins of the horizontal stabilizer rear spar.”
“We are issuing this AD to prevent premature failure of the attach pins, which could cause reduced structural integrity of the horizontal stabilizer to fuselage attachment, resulting in loss of control of the airplane,” the FAA said in a statement.
The directive is not an emergency and it shouldn’t disrupt air travel. In fact, none of the 737s are being grounded.
Airlines will have until next month to begin the inspections.
