(PALM BEACH, Fla.) — Socialite and fashion designer Lilly Pulitzer known for her tropical print dresses died on Sunday morning, according to an announcement on the Lilly Pulitzer Company’s Facebook page.
“Lilly Pulitzer Rousseau passed away peacefully in Palm Beach, surrounded by family and loved ones,” the announcement read. “Lilly has been a true inspiration to us and we will miss her.”
“In the days and weeks ahead we will celebrate all that Lilly meant to us,” the statement continued. “Lilly was a true original who has brought together generations through her bright and happy mark on the world.”
Pulitzer’s fashion career started when the young New York City socialite opened a juice stand in Palm Beach. Her bright tropical print dresses were originally were meant to hide juice stains, but quickly became iconic prep symbols, notably worn by Jackie Kennedy.
Pulitzer is survived by her three children, Peter, Minnie, and Liza. She was 81.
