While the team failed to lived up to expectations due to numerous factors, Laviolette will return for his fifth season in South Philadelphia. For just the second time since 1995, the Flyers won’t be making it to the postseason this season.  The team went 23-22-3 and were 10th in the Eastern Conference this past year. The lockout along with numerous injuries and stunted development of younger players led to the team’s demise this year.

Despite the team’s shortcomings, Laviolette is still confident that the team can turn things around.

“Certainly, this is not where we wanted to be,” he said. “This is not the outcome that we were looking for. I think when things like this happen, certainly I feel responsible. I’m the head coach of this team. It’s an uneasy feeling right now to be out of the playoffs when the expectation is to be in the playoffs.”

During his time with the Flyers, Laviolette has gone 145-95-29. He took the team to the Stanley Cup Finals during the 2009-2010 season.
