Moms’ Group Issues Reminder of Presidents’ Promises After Shootings

Spencer Platt/Getty Images(WASHINGTON) — Congress may have turned away from background checks and ammo regulations for the time being, but gun control advocacy group Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America is working to ensure they don’t forget the issue.
The organization released a video Tuesday with a mash-up of Presidents Clinton, George W. Bush and Obama responding after incidents of gun violence that took place during their respective presidencies. The leaders reference Virginia Tech and Columbine, as well as the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
“We’re going to have to come together and take meaningful action,” President Obama says, standing in the White House briefing room during the emotional speech he gave following the news of Newtown.
The video then jumps to a clip of President Bush saying, “…in any way we can.”
“Regardless of the politics,” Obama says, as the video jumps back to him.
The package of gun regulation reform that President Obama pushed in the wake of Sandy Hook died in the Senate. Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., who sponsored a bipartisan amendment on background checks with Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.V., blamed partisanship and a vocal minority for the bill’s failure and hinted that gun control legislation might get another shot in the future.
President Obama referenced three mass shootings in relation to the Boston Marathon bombing Tuesday.
“People, I think, understand that we’ve got to do everything we can to prevent these kinds of attacks from taking place, but people also understand, in the same way they understand after a shooting in Aurora or Newtown or Virginia Tech or after the foiled attempts in Times Square or in Detroit, that we’re not going to stop living our lives because warped, twisted individuals try to intimidate us. We’re going to do what we do, which is go to work, raise our kids, go to ball games, run in marathons,” the president told reporters during a press briefing.
He added, “And at the same time, we’re going to make sure that everybody’s cooperating and is vigilant and doing everything we can, without being naive, to try to prevent these attacks from happening in the future.”
