National September 11 Memorial & Museum Charging $2 Service Fee

DON EMMERT/AFP/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — The National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York has begun charging visitors a $2 service fee to reserve passes online or by phone.
The memorial said the fee is temporary until the museum is finished being built. Retired FDNY deputy chief Jim Riches, who lost his firefighter son in the attacks, said he is disgusted by the fee.
“It’s not the Museum of Modern Art. It’s a memorial and a museum to never forget the loved ones who died on 9/11,” he said. “I think it’s a disgrace. I think all Americans should be allowed to go down there, free of charge and pay their respect and show some dignity to the three thousand Americans that were murdered that day.”
The memorial, which opened two years ago, is not charging for same-day passes to the site.
