Three Consecutive Days of Election Protests in Venezuela
Published at(CARACAS, Venezuela) — Venezuela remains in a delicate state after Sunday’s presidential election, in which Nicolas Maduro was declared the winner by a very slim margin over opposition candidate Henrique Capriles.
According to Venezuelan officials, Maduro, Hugo Chavez’s handpicked successor, won the election with just 300,000 votes more than Capriles. But the opposition candidate and his supporters are demanding a full recount of votes.
The opposition organized a protest on Wednesday, but was forced to cancel it after President Maduro accused Capriles of trying to stage a coup, and said he would “not allow” any protest to go into downtown Caracas.
