Tim Pernetti Out as Rutgers Athletic Director
Published at(NEW YORK) — Amid the controversy surrounding Rutgers University with former men’s basketball head coach Mike Rice, Tim Pernetti is no longer the athletic director.
Pernetti resigned on Friday morning.
There was a national outcry earlier this week when ESPN’s Outside the Lines aired a piece showing Rice physically and verbally abusing players in practice. Among other things, he yelled anti-gay slurs and launched basketballs at them.
In December, Pernetti suspended Rice for three games and issued him a $50,000 fine for his actions. Once the tapes became public, more than 50 Rutgers faculty members signed a letter calling for Pernetti’s dismissal.
A 1993 Rutgers graduate, Pernetti was hired as the university’s athletic director in 2009.
