The Dow lost 5.69 points to close at 14,572.85. Nasdaq fell off 28.35 points to 3,239.17. The S&P gave up 7.02 points, closing at 1,562.17.

The Dow gained 11 percent in the first quarter for its best quarterly percentage gain since 1998.

The Institute for Supply Management reported that its manufacturing index expanded for a fourth consecutive month. However, it grew more slowly in March, held back by weaker growth in production and new orders.
