Velasquez defeated Antonio Silva at 1:21 of Round 1 after he struck Silva with numerous shots to the jaw.  Referee Mario Yamasaki ended the fight after looking at the damage done to Silva, despite a protest.

“The important thing was to stay moving,” Velasquez said. “Look for takedowns. Look for punches. But never stay in front of him.”

Velasquez now sits at 12-1 for his career and Silva dropped to 18-5.

“The fight was stopped too early,” Silva said. “The way that I think is that the saying that applies to athletes when they do something wrong or illegal, is the same for the referees. They too should be penalized.”

Velasquez next opponent will be Junior dos Santos, who took the heavyweight title from him two years ago.
