Chris Christie Had Weight Loss Surgery in February
Published at(NEW YORK) — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has struggled with his weight for years, but he says turning 50 last September made him want to get healthier for the sake of his wife and children.
ABC News has confirmed that Christie underwent lap-band stomach surgery in February to restrict how much food it takes to make him feel full. The news was first reported by the New York Post.
A top aide to the Republican tells ABC News that the governor kept the surgery — a one-day, outpatient procedure — such a secret that not even his top advisors knew he was doing it.
The aide says Christie checked into a hospital on Feb. 16 under a pseudonym and told only his family and chief of staff. His other top aides only found out about the surgery on Monday.
So far, Christie has lost more than 30 pounds, according to one of his advisers.
