According to police, the incident started around 3 a.m. when at least one teenager broke into the 54-year-old woman’s home in the Holmesburg neighborhood of Philadelphia. The intruders entered through her basement door. Their voices woke up the woman, and that’s when her guide dog took action, and chased them from the house.

However even after the intruders were gone the woman was still in danger. According to police, the intruders had turned left her gas stove on without igniting the burner, so her home started to fill with natural gas.

“[It was a] very dangerous situation,” Francis Bachmayer, a captain at the Philadelphia Police department, told reporters. “At 3 o’clock in the morning it could have been a very serious situation. Thank god there were no injuries.”

After chasing the intruders from her home, the guide dog led the woman to her phone so she could call 911. After police arrived, they were able to get the woman to safety and turn off the gas without it igniting.

After an investigation, police arrested 18-year-old Tomayo McDuffy on burglary charges. According to ABC News station WPVI-TV in Philadelphia, McDuffy is a one of the victim’s neighbors.
