Karzai: US Wants Nine Bases in Afghanistan After 2014
Published at(KABUL, Afghanistan) — Speaking to a group of university students, Afghan President Hamid Karzai publicly disclosed a tidbit American officials have been tight-lipped on: the number of bases the U.S. has requested to keep in Afghanistan.
According to Karzai, the U.S. has asked to keep nine bases, including ones in Kabul, Herat, Jalalabad, Kandahar, Helmand and Bagram.
Karzai says he’s ready to allow the bases to stay under U.S. control, but wants security and economic guarantees first.
U.S. officials in Kabul aren’t commenting.
