Reid: Senate to ‘Take Appropriate Action’ After IRS’ IG Report

Getty 072312 HarryReid?  SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1368473387110Bill Clark/CQ Roll Call(CLEVELAND) — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., says that as soon as the IRS Inspector General’s report is released, the Senate will quickly take action if necessary.

“These allegations, of course, are very troubling,” Reid said, opening up the Senate floor Monday afternoon. “We need to get to the bottom of what happened and the inspector general will get to the bottom of this. In the meantime, no one should jump to conclusions. We should all rest assured as soon as we have the inspector general’s report, the senate will swiftly take appropriate action.”

Reid said he has spoken to chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, Sen. Max Baucus, about this issue and says that he has “full confidence” in the ability of the committee “to get to the bottom of this matter and recommend appropriate action.”

If true, Reid said the alleged actions of the IRS would be a “terrible breach of the public’s trust.”

“Whether they are investigating conservative groups or liberal groups, they should not be involved in this. Targeting any group based on its political stance is completely inappropriate,” he continued.
