Economists had anticipated adding around 153,000 jobs in April.

The unemployment rate, in turn, fell from 7.6 percent to 7.5 percent.  Economists had expected that figure to remain unchanged.

The better than expected figures follow a disappointing jobs report in which the Labor Department reported that only 88,000 jobs were added in March.

That total, along with February’s, were revised on Friday to show that 114,000 additional jobs were added in those months.
