Azarenka slipped during the second set and after receiving treatment during an injury timeout, she bounced back despite the pain.

“Today there is not much you can really see,” Azarenka told ESPN after the match.  “It’s going to be about tomorrow.”

Third-seeded Maria Sharapova took care of the 37th-ranked Kristina Mladenovic 7-6 (5), 6-3 and improved to 11-0 all-time in the first round at the All England Club.

Monica Puig, 19, pounded out 38 winners and eliminated fifth-seeded Sara Errani 6-3, 6-2.  Ana Ivanovic topped Virginie Razzano 7-6 (1), 6-0.
