“About 15 or 18 pitches in with decent intensity, he started to feel it,” Red Sox manager John Farrell said. “His own words were, ‘It’s not ready yet.'”

Buchholz threw on flat-ground for two consecutive days and reportedly felt no issues. But once he went on the mound, he felt pain.

“It’s more specifically his follow-through,” Farrell added, ” but only the follow-through at a greater intensity. That ceiling continues to be pushed back, but it’s not to the point of a normal bullpen, intensified bullpen or game activity.”

The 28-year-old Buchholz last pitched on June 8, and went on the disabled list on June 18.

When healthy, Buchholz has been one of the best pitchers in all of baseball. In 12 starts this season, Buchholz went 9-0 with a 1.71 ERA.
