The 27-year-old Schneider started 30 games during the regular season this year for Vancouver, compiling a 17-9-4 record to go along with a 2.11 goals-against average and .927 save percentage.

Despite the trade, Schneider will serve as the backup to current Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur.

The 41-year-old Brodeur still has one year remaining on his contract.

“Marty is still the No. 1 goaltender. There’s no question of that. It’s just a question of how much he can play to keep him at the top of his game,” Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said. “This gives us that transition that we feel we would have loved to have gotten maybe a year ago if it was possible.”

As for the Canucks, they ended up selecting center Bo Horvat with the ninth pick.

With the Schneider being traded the Canucks are left with Roberto Luongo as their goalie.

Luongo, who is entering the fourth year of a 12-year, $64 million contract, had previously said he wanted to be traded. Instead Schneider is out, and according to TSN, Luongo is “shocked.”
