Maple Leafs Acquire Goalie Bernier from Kings

Len Redkoles/NHLI via Getty Images(NEW YORK) — The Toronto Maple Leafs traded winger Matt Frattin, goalie Ben Scrivens and a second-round draft pick in either 2014 or 2015 (Toronto’s choice) to the Los Angeles Kings for goalie Jonathan Bernier. Bernier was the Kings first-round pick in the 2006 draft, but has served as Jonathan Quick’s backup the past four seasons.
Although goalie James Reimer helped lead the Maple Leafs to the playoffs for the first time since 2004 last season, Bernier is expected to fight with Reimer for the No. 1 job.
“Nothing is being guaranteed to anybody…It’s a situation where we feel we’re deeper. We feel they both have great potential,” Maple Leafs general manager Dave Nonis said in a conference call. “We feel we have two of the top young goaltenders in the league right now. Both we feel have the potential to be solid No. 1s.”
During his time with the Kings, Bernier had a 29-20-6 record with a .912 save percentage, a 2.36 goals-against average and six shutouts.
As for the Kings, they acquire Frattin, 25, who in 25 games with the Leafs last season had seven goals and six assists.
Ben Scrivens, 26, played in 20 games last season posting a 7-9-0 record with a .915 save percentage, 2.69 goals-against-average and two shutouts.
