“I feel sorry for Paula Deen,” Stewart said Wednesday on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live. “She’s a public figure. And I know you have to be extremely careful being a public figure.”

Stewart was convicted in 2004 for insider trading and sentenced to five months in a federal prison. Deen, on the other hand, is embroiled in a controversy after she admitted to using a racial slur. Since then, many companies that had endorsed the 66-year-old chef — including Wal-Mart, Target and Home Depot, have all dropped her, as has her television home, the Food Network.

When asked if she agreed with The Food Network’s decision to cancel Deen’s show, Stewart was careful to say, “No comment.”

Deen’s controversy was sparked by her admitted used of the n-word, which came to light after a former employee at one of her Savannah, Georgia restaurants filed a lawsuit claiming racial and sexual harassment by Deen and her brother, Bubba Hier, while working for them.
