“Monsters University” Tops Box Office with $82 Million Debut

Disney-Pixar’s animated prequel Monsters University premiered in first place, earning an estimated $82 million.  It is the 14th consecutive Pixar release to debut at number one.

Brad Pitt’s thriller World War Z also opened over the weekend with a bang.  It finished in second place with $66 million.  The total represents Pitt’s best opening weekend ever.

Last week’s top movie, the Superman flick Man of Steel, fell to the third spot, raising $41.2 million.  It has now made more than $200 million at the domestic box office to date.

The Bling Ring, which expanded to more than 600 theaters on Friday, landed outside the top 10.

Here are the top 10 movies from Friday through Sunday, with estimated ticket sales, according to Hollywood.com:

1. Monsters University, $82 million
2. World War Z, $66 million
3. Man of Steel, $41.2 million
4. This Is the End, $13 million
5. Now You See Me, $7.87 million
6. Fast & Furious 6, $4.7 million
7. The Internship, $3.43 million
8. The Purge, $3.41 million
9. Star Trek Into Darkness, $3 million
10. Iron Man 3, $2.2 million
