Darcis dominated and won 7-6 (4), 7-6 (8), 6-4 to snap Nadal’s 22-match win streak.

“Nobody was expecting my win today,” the 135th-ranked Darcis told the BBC. “Of course for me it’s a big win.”

The loss for Nadal marks the first time he was defeated in the first-round of any Grand Slam event.

“It’s not the right day,” Nadal said.  “I tried my best out there in every moment, was not possible for me this afternoon.”

Nadal missed seven months with a left knee injury after losing in the second round at Wimbledon last year, and hasn’t played on a grass course.

“In grass it’s difficult to adapt your game and when you don’t have the chance to play before, I didn’t have that chance this year, it’s tougher and I didn’t find my rhythm.”

Seeking his eighth Wimbledon title, Roger Federer took care of Victor Hanescu 6-3, 6-2, 6-0 on Monday as well.

Sixth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga topped David Goffin, 7-6 (4), 6-4, 6-3 in his match.
