Specifically, opposition activist Abu Yasser said on Tuesday that the Syrian military will be assisted by thousands of Hezbollah fighters from Lebanon as well as members of the Iraqi Fadl Brigades, who are Shiite militants trained by Iran.

Yasser said these non-Syria fighters are already collecting en masse outside of Damascus and awaiting word to begin an offensive that seeks to undo the gains made by rebels since the civil war broke out in March 2011.

One of the targets the Syrian government hopes to regain is the town of al-Qusayr near the border with Lebanon.  It’s a strategic stronghold since the opposition uses it to transport fighters and supplies.

The Lebanese government has taken a neutral position regarding the conflict although Hezbollah is concerned that if Syria is taken over by Sunni Muslims, violence will eventually spill over into its country.
