Modra/Sports Imagery/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — After New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft came out and admitted Russian President Vladimir Putin stole his Super Bowl ring during a business trip back in 2005, Putin and his camp are now denying the theft ever happened.

While giving a speech last Thursday, Kraft claimed that during a trip to Russia, he let Putin put on the ring and instead of giving it back to him, Putin put it in his pocket and walked away with it.

Kraft wanted the ring back, but was apparently told by White House officials to let it go and give it as a gift in order to preserve relations between the two sides. Now, Putin and his staff are denying any kind of theft or deception.

Responding to Kraft’s accusation, a Putin spokesman said, “What Mr. Kraft is saying now is weird.  I was standing 20 centimeters away from him and Mr. Putin and saw and heard how Mr. Kraft gave this ring as a gift.”

The Super Bowl 39 ring currently sits in the Kremlin Library.
