According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Great Gatsby actress is said to be producers Temple Hill and The Arlook Group’s top choice to play the lead in Rodham and is expected to soon meet with director James Ponsoldt.

The indie drama focuses on Rodham as the youngest lawyer on the House judiciary committee to impeach President Richard Nixon who must choose between a destined path to the White House and her unresolved feelings for a charming young suitor from Arkansas, future President Bill Clinton.

The screenplay by Young Il Kim was included on the 2012 Black List of the best unproduced screenplays before receiving the green light.

But Mulligan, 28, who was nominated for a best actress Oscar for her breakout role in An Education, isn’t the only actress in the running.

“We’re very fortunate that a lot of really great actors are interested in playing these roles,” Ponsoldt told U.K. newspaper The Sunday Times last month about both on-screen Clintons. “We’re in an enviable position.”

“Regardless of people’s political affiliation or how they feel about Hillary Clinton, you don’t find people who question the quality of her intelligence or her drive,” he added. “I want a wonderful actress who could embody that.”
