The contract allows the Red Wings to avoid arbitration with the 24-year-old Smith, who will make $1.25 million next season and $1.275 million in 2014-15.

Smith was selected by Detroit in the first round of the 2007 NHL Draft. He played in 34 regular season games for the Wings last season, scoring no goals and tallying eight assists.

Smith had five points in 14 games during the 2013 Stanley Cup playoffs, and scored the game-winning goal in Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals versus the Chicago Blackhawks.
