In an interview with BBC1, David Cameron said that the “depressing trajectory” Syria currently faces means that things have reached “a stalemate” after more than two years of war and over 100,000 people killed.

What’s more, Cameron dropped his strongest hint yet that Britain will not be arming rebels even as the U.S. said it would and the European Union has dropped its arms embargo.

Cameron told BBC1, “We’re not intervening by supplying weapons, but I think we can with partners…to strengthen those parts of the Syrian opposition that really do represent the Syrian people.”

The British leader said his government wasn’t going to abandon the Syrian opposition but also expressed concerns that extremist elements are now a significant presence in the country, as they also strive for al-Assad’s ouster but for different reasons than forces committed to democracy.
