Dolphins’ Mike Pouncey Won’t Talk About “Free Hernandez” Hats
Published at(DAVIE, Fla.) — Miami Dolphins center Mike Pouncey sparked controversy recently when he and his brother, Pittsburgh Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey, wore hats that read “Free Hernandez” referring to the incarcerated Aaron Hernandez. Still, Mike has no desire to discuss the incident.
“I’m just here to focus on football,” he said following the Dolphins first training camp practice on Sunday. “We get paid a lot of money to act a certain way, and that’s the way we should be acting.”
Both Pouncey brothers were teammates with Hernandez at the University of Florida from 2007 to 2008. Hernandez is currently charged with the murder of Odin Lloyd and has pleaded not guilty.
Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin agreed with Pouncey’s sentiment.
“I will tell you that it’s important for every member of this organization — player, coach — to represent the Miami Dolphins in a first-class manner,” Philbin said.
During their recent birthday party at a Miami club, the brothers were photographed posing while wearing hats supporting their former teammate.
