(WASHINGTON) — More questions are expected on Capitol Hill Wednesday about the National Security Agency surveillance program that collects Americans’ phone records.  And just in time for the Senate hearings, the Obama administration appears ready to provide more answers.

A U.S. official tells ABC News that documents relating to the collection of so-called “metadata” will be declassified Wednesday morning in an attempt to shed more light on the program first disclosed by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden.

Also in the spirit of openness, the Justice Department now says it will tell terrorism defendants when that surveillance is used against them.

The House narrowly rejected a measure to effectively kill the program earlier this month.  Now, the Senate will take its turn in scrutinizing the NSA surveillance.  The Senate Judiciary Committee is slated to meet with top intelligence officials.
