Sprecher/Bloomberg via Getty Images(IRVINE, Calif.) — Taco Bell is discontinuing kid’s meals and toys at its restaurants nationwide beginning this July. The Mexican fast food chain says it will be the first national quick service chain to do so.

Taco Bell says its kid’s meals “have had an insignificant impact on system sales.”

“As we continue our journey of being a better, more relevant Taco Bell, kid’s meals and toys simply no longer make sense for us to put resources behind,” Greg Creed, chief executive officer of Taco Bell, said.

Taco Bell plans to expand its menu to offer “more balanced” options, but current kid’s meal items will still be available individually on the regular menu.

“What does make sense is concentrating on expanding choices that meet and exceed the diverse needs of consumers of all ages, without losing focus on what makes us great today,” Creed added.

The chain anticipates to change every Taco Bell restaurant nationwide by January 2014.
