Mariota finished the game without a turnover, completing 12-of-21 passes for 234 yards while rushing for 113 yards on five carries.

“He was clean and did a nice job,” Helfrich said of Mariota’s performance. “During the second quarter there was a stagnate play and he made sure to get after everyone in the huddle. Just shows he is progressing, taking the next step in his maturity.”

The Ducks (1-0) scored early and often putting up 24 points in the first quarter. Twelve of those points were scored on two touchdown runs by running back De’Anthony Thomas. Thomas finished the day with 128 yards on 18 carries.

Nicholls State senior running back Marcus Washington had 11 catches for 92 yards in the loss.
