Cardinals Acquire John Axford from Brewers
Published at(ST. LOUIS) — The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired relief pitcher John Axford from the Milwaukee Brewers Friday in exchange for a player to be named later.
The 30-year-old Axford is expected to add bullpen depth to the Cardinals, who enter the weekend just one game ahead of the Pittsburgh Pirates for the NL Central lead.
“John is a reliever that offers experience as both a setup man and closer,” said Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak. “He’s also a pitcher who brings familiarity with the N.L. Central, pennant race baseball and the postseason.”
Axford is 6-7 this season with a 4.45 ERA, no saves and 19 holds in 62 games. He saved 46 games back in 2011 for the Brewers.
The team is hoping to have Axford available when they take on the Pirates this weekend.
