Jason Heyward Breaks Jaw After HBP
Published at(NEW YORK) — Atlanta Braves outfielder Jason Heyward suffered two jaw fractures when he was hit by a pitch Wednesday in a game against the New York Mets.
Heyward returned to Atlanta Wednesday night and is expected to undergo surgery on Thursday. He could miss anywhere from 4-6 weeks.
Heyward was hit with a 90-mph fastball from Mets starter Jonathan Niese in the sixth inning of Wednesday’s game. He stayed down for a few minutes before walking off the field under his own power.
“I felt horrible,” Niese said. “Sometimes this game can be pretty dangerous. One minute you’re playing, the next you’re down. I felt terrible.”
Heyward entered Wednesday batting .254 with 13 homers and 37 RBIs on the season. The Braves went on to win the game 4-1 in 10 innings.
