Moms are often told about the benefits of breastfeeding for their children. Many mothers worry, however, that if they are on medications, the baby may be affected by the medicine too.

In a new report, the American Academy of Pediatrics says that most drugs used by mothers do not cause concern for a child’s health. Using past research on pain medication, herbal supplements and other drugs, researchers determined that most medications show up in extremely low levels in breast milk. These findings also go for vaccines, which are safe for babies and important for mothers and pregnant women alike.

Some drugs should be avoided, however. Mothers are advised to communicate with their doctors on what drugs they are taking.
