Navy Issues Rules to Limit Sale of Alcohol

Dan Kitwood/Getty Images(NORFOLK, Va.) — The Navy has issued a series of new rules limiting the sale of alcohol as a part of its efforts to reduce the number of alcohol-related criminal offenses.
The changes include: stopping the sale of liquor at its mini marts; banning the sale of alcohol at any of its stores between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.; and only displaying alcohol in the back of stores, the Washington Post reports.
The Navy hopes the ban will contribute to its efforts to improve alcohol education and awareness. According to the Washington Post, the number of alcohol-related criminal offenses in the Navy dropped from 5,950 to 4,216 in the past five years. The number of DUI offenses also decreased.
In 2012, the Navy reported $91.9 million in distilled spirits sales, $39.3 million in wine sales, and $62.3 million in beer sales, the Washington Post reports. The Navy puts 70 percent of their alcohol sale profits towards morale, welfare, and recreation programs.
The new rules will go into effect in October.
