Strong Earthquake Shakes Japan

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(TOKYO) — A strong earthquake hit Japan midday Sunday with no immediate reports of damage or injuries, according to the Weather Channel.
The quake, centered off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture, shook the same northeastern region devastated by the giant earthquake and tsunami in March 2011. But with a preliminary magnitude of 6.0, the Japan Meteorological Agency reports no risk of tsunami from this quake.
According to the Weather Channel, Tokyo Electric Power Co. did not report problems at any of its nuclear power plants. The company said they experienced no power outages and radiation monitors did not show any change.
Tokyo Electric Power Co. is still recovering from the impact the March 2011 tsunami had on its plants. Tons of water are used daily to keep the reactors under control, the Weather Channel reports.
