The cable network hasn’t offered many details on the project, but it will be set within The Walking Dead universe, and will feature new characters and a new story.  It’s expected to premiere sometime in 2015.

AMC president Charlie Collier says, “It’s a big world and we can’t wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse.”

Robert Kirkman, whose comic book series serves as the basis for The Walking Dead, adds, “The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.”

News of The Walking Dead companion series comes one week after AMC announced plans for a Breaking Bad spinoff, Better Call Saul.

The fourth season of The Walking Dead begins Oct. 13.  Deadline.com reports Twilight actress Christian Serratos will have a recurring role as Rosita Espinosa, a survivor of the apocalypse.  Serratos played Angela in the Twilight series.

While fans await the return of The Walking Dead, another AMC hit, Breaking Bad, is slowly coming to an end with record ratings. The episode that aired last Sunday drew a series-high 6.4 million viewers, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The series finale airs Sept. 29.
