Both the HTC One and the Galaxy S4 have large high-resolution screens that dwarf the iPhone 5’s 4-inch screen.

While the current iPhone still fits comfortably in one hand, Apple may be acknowledging that size does matter and bigger might be better. A new report by the Wall Street Journal said that the company has been experimenting with screens as large as 6 inches for future models of the iPhone.

Apple was known to have been pilot testing bigger screens as far back as July. The company seems particular interested in a 4.8-inch screen, which puts it somewhere in between the HTC One and the Galaxy S4.

But being interested and running tests doesn’t necessarily translate to bigger screens for the next batch of iDevices. Apple has a history of playing around with designs that never make it into the final product. The iPhone itself has gone through several different prototypes and revisions.

Many people will have their eyes glued to their computers during Apple’s eagerly awaited presentation on Sept. 10. While these bigger screens are not likely to be part of the reveal, the fingerprint sensor and the update to the iOS7 operating system will likely be discussed in depth.
