Urlacher’s revelation isn’t the first time it’s been suggested that players fake injuries to stop opposing offenses from constantly firing off plays and wearing out defenses.

‘We had a guy who was the designated dive guy,” Urlacher said, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Urlacher added that even coaches were in on the act. He claims that a Bears’ coach would simulate the diving motion a swimmer makes with his arms, which would signal a player to go down.

Even though it was common practice, Urlacher says that it was never actually practiced when the Bears would prepare for an upcoming game.

Urlacher played 13 seasons in the NFL, all with the Bears. He made eight Pro Bowls and was named to the NFL’s All-Pro team five times. He retired during the offseason.
